We had an incredible time at the National Safe Schools Conference in Anaheim, connecting with educators, school safety professionals, law enforcement, and district leaders who share a commitment to creating safer schools. The conversations were candid, practical, and grounded in real experience — exactly the kind of exchange that makes an event worth the trip.

What We Heard

A few themes came up again and again:

  • Plans exist, but exercising them is hard. Most districts have an emergency operations plan on the shelf. Far fewer have the time or staff to run regular drills and tabletops that test whether the plan actually works.
  • Coordination is the gap. School safety isn't just the school's job. It involves law enforcement, fire, EMS, public health, and the district office. Getting everyone in the same room, with the same plan, is a recurring challenge.
  • Roles blur under stress. When something happens, people need to already know what they're responsible for. That clarity only comes from practice.
  • Ensuring teachers and staff know where they fit in is a persistent challenge. Most teachers understand the basics of what to do when they get the announcement or the ping on their phone, but what do they do next is often missing. This leads to high anxiety about what will happen in these events.
